SWG vs SASE: The Definition

To begin, SWG refers to a secure web gateway, something that is usually part of a bigger virtual private network (VPN) system. It is used to protect an organization’s sensitive information and assets when they are accessed over the Internet. Then, an SWG is usually installed at the external or perimeter network of the organization while SASE is usually located on the inside network.

However, in some situations, SASE may be placed in between the firewall and the internal network, which serves as a choke point or a bottleneck for information. This may allow data leaks to occur even if there is no breach of security at the firewall.

In addition, SWG may be deployed in remote locations where it is more difficult to detect data leaks compared to SASE. Then, SWGs are seen as better than SASE because they can protect data from being stolen even if there is no breach in security. Also, added security features such as deep packet inspection and intrusion detection make them more reliable compared to SASE.

However, cost-wise, SWG may be costlier than SASE because of its added features. On top of that, SWG requires more expertise and maintenance compared to SASE. Then, another point that users should take note of is that SWG should be used only if their network is connected to the Internet. While SASE should be used if it will only be used internally or within a LAN or WAN system.

SWG vs SASE: Which One?

Today, companies are constantly facing cyber-attacks that may jeopardize the security of their sensitive data. As a result, more and more companies are turning to the use of a secure web gateway to protect their data.

Also, SWG is more reliable compared to SASE because of its added security features. For instance, it can block access to malicious websites while also keeping track of the location where its users are. In fact, it can filter data traffic at the packet level and provide security for applications such as VoIP and video conferencing.

Then, when it comes cost-wise, SASE may be cheaper than SWG because of its simplicity and ease of use. However, SWG is known for its easy scalability and high-speed performance. And because of this, more companies are switching to SWG than before.
