Secure Web Gateway vs Virtual Private Network

Secure Web Gateway vs Virtual Private Network

Secure web gateway vs virtual private network. What are the differences between these two? Are there any? If so, find out below.

Secure Web Gateway vs Virtual Private Network

To begin, a secure web gateway (SWG) refers to a network appliance that performs filtering and inspection on HTTP traffic and requires no software installation. This type of gateway is also known as a web proxy server. It is deployed near the server and has better security features.

On the other hand, a virtual private network (VPN) is a private computer network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure such as the Internet. It enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computers were directly connected to the private network. All while benefiting from the functionality, security, and management policies of the private network.

Conceptually, a VPN is created by establishing a virtual point-to-point connection through the use of dedicated connections, encryption, or a combination of the two. A VPN available from the public Internet can provide some of the benefits of a wide area network (WAN).

From a user perspective, the resources available within the private network can be accessed remotely. It should be noted that there are no differences in terms of functionality. Since both devices function in the same way.

The difference lies in where it is deployed, for example:

  • In the case of SWG, it is deployed near or what is called at “edge” or “perimeter” of an organization’s protected area (intranet),
  • while in the case of VPN, it is deployed inside an organization’s protected area (intranet).

Moreover, SWG has better security features than VPN because it takes place on the perimeter. So, this means that it has better controls and security measures compared to VPN which takes place inside an organization’s protected area (intranet).

How, then, can companies benefit from these two tools?

Benefiting From Secure Web Gateway and Virtual Private Network

To benefit from both SWG and VPN, companies must first have a reliable network with the necessary bandwidth to support all their data traffic. Thus, with the two tools, companies can secure their data and prevent unauthorized access or information leakage.

So, SWG and VPN can be deployed on a company’s public websites. This is to prevent intrusion of malicious code or unwanted malicious activity. It will also help in protecting the company’s brand from being diluted by unauthorized use of their names or trademarks.

For instance, SWG can be used as a web filter to block malicious scripts that could infect the host server. It can also be used to monitor employee activities and ensure they are not using the company’s network for any illegal activities. Such as downloading pirated music or movies, phishing emails, and distributing malware.

Conclusion

So, if companies are to benefit from SWG and VPN, they must have reliable networks with the necessary bandwidth to support all their data traffic. This will help them secure their data and prevent unauthorized access or information leakage. However, it is still important for them to know when and where to use the two tools.
