Network Security vs System Security

What is network security vs system security? What is the difference between the two? And which one does your company need more? This blog will help you know.

Network Security vs System Security

Network security refers to the security of a network and system security refers to the security of an individual computer, server, or workstation. Also, this is the security in terms of protection of network devices like routers, switches, and firewalls, connected to the internet. It is achieved through blocking various possible attacks in addition to setting up proper passwords and firewalls.

Then, this includes:

  • Network Antivirus. Defending against viruses that can corrupt your computer or steal data.
  • Firewall. Protects your computer from being hacked or malicious programs by blocking access to your computer unless you grant permission.
  • Intrusion Detection System (IDS). Used for monitoring attacks on a system and to block them by shutting down the internet connection. Or by sending an email to the concerned person.

On the other hand, system security is ensuring that networks are secured from individuals who have access to them. System security is about protecting the data stored inside your system from being read or modified without permission.

Then, some of the things you can do to improve system security include:

  • Strong Passwords. It is essential to use strong passwords as weak passwords can be guessed easily. Strong passwords use combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols that are not related to each other in any way. Then, passwords should be changed frequently as they are easier to crack when they are used for a long time.
  • System Antivirus. The antivirus software protects your computer from malware (viruses, worms, etc). It scans your computer when you start it up and checks all files for viruses before they open up.
  • Strong Firewall: A firewall restricts incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predefined rules (or filtering policies). This is for controlling network traffic flow into and out of private networks.

Network Security vs System Security: Which One?

Which one does your company need the most? Well, there is no clear-cut answer to this because every company requires both. Every company should have a firewall in place, which blocks unauthorized access to its system. And you also need an antivirus installed on your computer, which can protect you from external threats like viruses, worms, and Trojan Horse.

Then, it is up to how much money you want to spend on security. If you are a small business owner and don’t have any valuable data to protect, then network security would be sufficient for you.

But if you are a large multinational organization and are handling sensitive data that you do not want anyone else accessing, then system security would be required. That is if you want to keep your data safe.

Conclusion

So, if you are in doubt about which one is more important to your company, then you should probably go for both. And if you have to choose between the two, then network security would be the way to go.
