This is in situations for which delegation is not feasible (e.g., routing based on load-balancing). Today, the term “proxy” is most often used concerning Internet web browsing and e-mail services.
However, it can also be used for traffic shaping or content filtering functionality provided. This is by firewalls, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) services, mobile phone networks, and video streaming services. And this includes Voice over IP (VoIP) services; peer-to-peer file sharing; cloud computing services; online gaming services, and anonymous instant messaging services.
Proxy Server Purpose and Advantage
The main purpose of using a proxy server is security: users can hide their IP addresses. So they can surf anonymously or get access to websites blocked by the local internet provider. Proxy servers also help you bypass ISP’s blocked websites like torrent sites.
Another advantage of a proxy server is that it helps you get to pass some firewall restrictions. So, this is like those set by your ISP or even country firewall. All you need to do is to set your browser settings to use a proxy server.
Most of the settings are done under the “Tools” menu in your browser. You can also set up a proxy using your operating system’s network settings. But the process varies depending on your OS. Proxy servers are commonly used on corporate intranets.
The purpose of a company-wide proxy server is usually to keep in-house traffic. This is within the corporate network, improving security and performance by removing excessive traffic from the Internet. Also, filtering websites accessed by employees, and caching frequently accessed web pages.
