Uninstalling McAfee

Make sure you have your McAfee product key handy. If you have purchased a new computer with McAfee pre-installed on it, the product key should be located on a sticker somewhere on the computer. If you have lost the product key, contact McAfee sales and support.

Many computers come with trial versions of McAfee pre-installed. These trial versions are free for 30 days only. So if you want to continue using McAfee after 30 days, you will need to buy a license. Before uninstalling the McAfee core firewall service, purchase a license to continue using the program.

Using Windows Control Panel

If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, go to Control Panel and select Programs and Features.
But if you are using Windows XP, go to Add or Remove Programs.
If you are using Windows 8/8.1, go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program .

You will see a list of all programs installed on your computer. Scroll through the list of programs until you see “McAfee Internet Security” or “McAfee Total Protection”. Click on it and select Uninstall/Change.

The uninstall wizard will open up. Follow these steps:
Uncheck the box next to “Run At Startup”. Click Next. Read the License Agreement and click I Agree. Select Install or Change Program Settings > Next. Click “Remove” when presented with the option between “Remove” and “Change”.

Click Finish when presented with the option between “Remove” and “Change”. Restart your computer when asked to do so.

Uninstalling Using Windows Add/Remove Programs Utility in XP

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs . Scroll through the list of programs installed on your computer until you find McAfee Internet Security or McAfee Total Protection. Select it and click Remove. Click Yes when prompted by the confirmation dialogue box that pops up.

Restart your computer when asked to do so.
If McAfee does not appear in this list, then your version may be older than XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). In this case, see if there is an uninstall option in the Add/Remove Programs utility under Control Panel in XP SP2. If there is no such option, then shut down your system completely and restart it while holding down the F8 key.

This will bring up a boot menu. Select Safe Mode from the list of options and then continue from step 1. If you are still running XP, McAfee may not be supported on your system anymore. The XP support for McAfee has ended in April 2014.

Uninstalling McAfee Core Firewall Service Using McAfee Remover Tool ^

Your PC may be running slow due to the core firewall service and other junk files created by the program. Before uninstalling McAfee, use the McAfee Remover tool to clean your computer first. This tool will scan and remove any unnecessary files that are taking up space on your hard drive.

Uninstall McAfee using Windows Control Panel

Other than using Control Panel to uninstall McAfee, you can also uninstall it using Run. Just go to Start > Run, type in “appwiz.cpl” (without quotes) and click OK or press Enter.
